The Program
We believe that children and teenagers need a safe place to grieve and be heard.  Trained volunteers who understand the needs of the grieving facilitate our groups.  Feelings shared with others who have experienced a similar situation help the children and teenagers cope with their loss and feel a sense of hope.
  1. The Cooper Foundation offers peer groups for children and teens 6-18 year olds and their families who are grieving the death of a significant person.
  2. Our peer groups are facilitated by trained volunteers.
  3. Each participant chooses how long to continue in the group.
  4. Each group is free to the participants.
  5. The Cooper Foundation is not a counseling or therapy service, but rather a safe place for children and teens to meet with others who are grieving.

The Groups
  1. Our children’s groups (6-12) consist of talking circles and a time for unstructured play.  Play activities are important grief work times for children because they express their grieving through language and creative play with others.
  2. Our teen groups (13-18) provide time to discuss death and grief issues with peers and trained adults.  Some teen groups will choose play activities as well.
  3. Our adult groups provide an opportunity to discuss concerns about raising children in grief, plus time to share experiences of own personal grief.
